Confronting China’s Impact on Climate

China is the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, but it is setting ambitious goals for tangible climate action. As a part of the Paris Agreement, China made visionary pledges that will lead global emissions reduction commitments, a necessity if we are going to protect people from the growing threats to their health, food, water and communities. As Hong Kong is part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, with which it shares many resources, including water and electricity, the country’s actions can have a big effect on our environment and safety as well.

Everyone has a part to play in saving nature and tackling climate change, and NGOs can be an influential force for collective action. In China, TNC is focusing on strategies that will strengthen the country’s pathways for mitigating emissions.

Millions of trees: Through the support of people like you, we are tackling climate change by planting millions of trees and protecting thousands of hectares of forests and grasslands across China, Mongolia and Indonesia. In China, we have already planted 25 million trees on 13,300 hectares and are seeking to continue at this pace. Trees’ natural ability to absorb carbon will keep three million tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere over the next 30 to 60 years, the equivalent to removing 400,000 cars off the road for one year.
